Young America's Dream
The play Young America's Dream, written in 1854 by Philip Thorp, depicts a battle between Liberty and Tyranny over America. This highly satirical text calls attention to the current Dream of American citizens. Philip portrays the people as being fully devoted to the cause of Liberty in their minds, but failing to do so in practice. The character of Tyranny becomes confused when one citizen refuses him and proceeds to list off all of the despotic and malicious acts occurring in America under the citizen's supervision. Preceding the Civil War by 7 years, this play truly shines the light on the hypocritical nature of the American Dream and the foundational value of "Liberty and Justice for all."
