American Protest Music
The general American public has never been a big fan of change. Although our society seems to have become more accepting, it is our nature as a whole to want things to stay the way they are and often avoid confrontational issues.
Music changes this standard. Music is the sound that breaks the silence when nobody knows what to say. Since music is known to have quite influential powers, over the years certain bold Americans have used music to be the voice for protest and change.
Ergo, the pattern has developed that any idea of means of major change within American society are squashed and frowned upon. Whether it be the hymns to end slavery or the rap music to protest the government, the American herd tends to sway to whichever side means less mess. This exhibit begs the question through the hymns of our history: how can society grow and develop without getting a little messy?
