"American education has historically made two sharp distinctions. The first is between local and national control of education: our federalist system puts state and local governments in charge of education, not the federal government. The second is between private and public schools: public schools receive government funding and are subject to rules and regulations to ensure that the funds are used appropriately, whereas private schools do not receive government funding and are given more freedom over what their educational programs look like and how their funds are used." |
The American education system makes it very clear in wanting to separate public and private schools. People are worried that the US is falling behind because many other countries are allowing the Government to help fund private schools. The quality of education between public and private schools is too distinct. There are also many internal problems within schools, namely bullying, and it affects a great amount of people around the country.

Obama is very clear on his goals: "For we know that the level of education a person attains is increasingly a prerequisite for success and a predictor of the income that person will earn through his or her life. 'new plan on Elementary and Secondary Education Act to overhaul No Child Left Behind". This is extremely important to American society because it publicizes the importance of education and how the US is failing to compete with other countries. He also addresses how the US is in need of an education overhaul because as a country we aren't being the leaders we should be.
This infographic shows the current status of the US among other countries in terms of academic progress and achievement. As you can see, the US ranks lower than expected on many significant categories. Our education initiative has fallen off quite a bit in the past decade. While we excel in the olympics we fail to be anywhere near the top 3 in academics.
This image shows the relation of American Education in the 1950s compared to American Education system today. This image is a good visual representation of the differences that were present in each time period. For example, it is shown that average teacher salary in the 1950s was $4,000, while average teacher salary in recent years was inflated to $39,000. From this statistic, it can be reasonably assumed that the Education System today is more of a for-profit business than it was in the 1950s.

This image shows two girls hugging each other, and is representative of people standing up against bullying as a whole. Bullying can truly have detrimental effects on not only the victim, but on the bully, bystanders, and the school as well. Bullying has been a prevalent issue in the American Education System for quite some time now, and the nation is not doing enough to combat it. This issue is also, to some extent, correlated with subpar achievement in many students, as bullying is linked to difficulties with learning, and can scare people away from wanting to learn. This issue is part of the reason why America is being surpassed in academics by many countries in recent years.
