Mainly in the form of literature, the concept of a self-made man has come up repeatedly especially in the culture and art of the United States. A country born from nothing and raised on "Cinderella Stories" of rags to riches is the kind of nation where the self-made identity can thrive.

The novel "Self-Made Man" by Norah Vincent is a memoir on the author's time undercover as the opposite gender, a man. Vincent explores how men function and act when women aren't around and does a different take on the self-made man. She also looks into the assumption that men have it easier in the workplace, which perhaps makes it easier for them to become self-made.
